2006 Projects
Redesign of Hoschton Website Completed
(August 1, 2006) “Planning Our Future…Honoring Our Past” is the theme of the newly redesigned City of Hoschton Website (http://www.cityofhoschton.com), which was published to the World Wide Web in the early morning hours on August 1, 2006.

The new website resulted from the work of the oversight committee appointed by the City Council in January. Members of the committee included Councilmembers Deborah Donaldson, Richard Green and Jim Jester, Web Designer Gerry Sidhom, City Clerk Cindy Edge and Hoschton citizen Tom Walden.

The goal of the project was “intended to enable citizens to more easily interact with their city government and to present the City of Hoschton in an attractive, informative and uncomplicated manner; one that was appealing and easy to use by website visitors,” according to committee chairperson Jim Jester. He added, “The members of the committee are proud in knowing that we have accomplished that important goal and now have the best website in the state for a community of our size.”

According to city officials, the new website is another example of the improvements and progress the city is making in improving services and presenting itself to citizens both near and far from the growing, northeast Georgia community.
Hoschton Depot Farmer’s Market an Early Success
(July 29, 2006) The weather cooperated and the crowds were heavy and enthusiastic according to Councilmember John Schulte, who was on-site to coordinate the second weekend of the new farmer’s market in downtown Hoschton.

Last weekend, the weather wasn’t much help to the two vendors that kicked off the inaugural weekend of the city’s program to create greater citizen activity in the downtown area during weekends. “Although the crowd was light, the first try was successful enough that word began to spread,” according to Schulte. “This weekend, the number of vendors increased from two to four and we have been contacted by several others that are interested in setting up stands and booths in the depot parking lot,” he said.

The City has made several recent improvements to the downtown square and depot park and Mayor Bill Copenhaver suggested the City Council consider ideas such as the weekend farmer’s market. It appears that idea is going to be a success.

The original idea was to have the farmer’s market adjacent to the historic Hoschton depot on the first and third Saturday of the month, from May through October. However, if its early success is an indicator, the City Council may have to reconsider increasing the days the City may be willing to make the area available to vendors.
Hoschton Depot Improvements on the Drawing Board
(June 23, 2006) The City Council’s Public Works Committee is moving ahead with its plans to have a new roof installed on the depot in July. That project will be closely followed with a new exterior paint job – all to be completed before the Fall Festival in mid-September.

At a recent Committee meeting, members of the Historical Commission and the Hoschton Women’s Civic Club were briefed on the plans for both projects. The new green metal roof will be complimented by painting the exterior a tan or wheat color. It was decided a color other than white would last longer and stay cleaner with all of the road traffic from nearby State Highway 53. Funding for the projects will come from the 2006 annual budget and local development grant funds that the City received earlier in the year.

Depot improvements are an important part of the City’s efforts to improve the downtown area and to enhance the appearance of the downtown square. The depot serves as the City’s centerpiece and the planned improvements should make the historical building even more of an attraction to visitors in our community.
